SWL in a downtown apartment...(curses!)

Living in the very center of Downtown Reno, with it's endless casinos and neon lights and other obnoxious RF mutilators, has done a beautiful job of wrecking my shortwave reception. The current solar situation is certianly not helping any either. That being said, is there an antenna that is sheilded or a loop antenna that i could build? My apartment is a studio and there is no roon for an outdoor antenna(which would pick up more noise anyway). I have an ANLP-1 active loop as well, which reduces the noise a little bit...but still not enough to enjoy listening. What about making buddies with the maintenance guy and seeing if you can get him to help you setup some type of antenna on the roof? You would be surprized what a 6-Pack and pizza can get you in the world. |

I agree...he should try to get a wire up on the roof of his building. I
know a ham in Brooklyn who was granted roof rights. He used the four corners of his large apartment building to erect a big horizontal loop. I don't know the construction details (how long, how high, etc.), but it works like gangbusters. I lived in Reno for a few years, not far from the Peppermill casino on Virginia Lake. If he could get out of town, he could probably find a nice spot for SWL. In fact, I halfway suspect that most of his noise problems are coming from the very building he lives in. RFI, like charity, begins at home. Steve |
