Mike - I used the supply that came with the R75 and added an LM-350
three terminal regulator right on top of the power supply case with a "claw" type heatsink. The voltage is regulated at 13 Vdc and the R75 is much cooler. I've had a couple of Drake R-8s, two NRD-525s, three FRG-100s and others and definitely prefer the R75. Were those 525's using external speakers? I'd figure that improving the audio on the 525 would give it a big boost in comparison with the R75. As for the R-8 vs. the R75, that's been hashed over so many times I'm not going there. Mine does have the DSP unit which provides somewhat better S:N under heavy QRN conditions. I also did the simpler AGC & sync detector mods and the AM sync works quite well now. CONS: well, it's really ugly and almost impossible to work on since most of the components are the tiniest surface mount parts. The audio isn't the best but an external speaker will help this immensly. The power supply delivers way too much voltage which causes the internal regulators in the R75 to run hot, so I put a 3-T regulator on the supply that provides a regulated 13 volts and that cooled things down considerably. I think it normally runs about 16 volts or so (?). Frank, did you build your own regulated power supply? I've seen plans for at least one for the R75 out on the net. --Mike L. |
