The FM tuning on my Sony has lost its bearings, but everything else still works fine. It just bugs me that a function has gone south. A local techie looked at it for $30, but thought I should probably take it to a Sony repair facility for further delving into. It's the usual bad 'lytics, as detailed on my 7600 page. Those early SMD things must have been pretty crappy. Basically as long as they haven't leaked and corroded the PCB, this problem is fixable, if a bit of a pain. Is it worth it to throw more money at this rig? I bought it new 16 years ago, for $400 Canadian, and have been generally well-satisfied with the radio, listening mostly to SW, Morse code, etc. Guess it doesn't really owe me much of anything. But maybe I should be looking at a rig with newer electronics, etc., probably for less dinero, but the same overall features ![]() The best portable this size for SSB certainly is the ICF-SW7600GR, as it has sideband-selectable SSB. Its AM audio, however, should be similarly depressingly muffled as the 7600G's, and speaker audio almost as bassless. Were the SW7600 not plagued with the bad caps, it would be a really decent rig. If you're seriously into SSB stuff, I would suggest to get a full-blown communications rx.
