Ham Radio Operators to Have Field Day Testing Emergency Communications:

SHARES hosts public demo during 24-hour period June 25-26: Ham radio
enthusiasts will be having a field day next weekend showing off their
disaster and emergency communications capabilities. The South Halton
Amateur Radio Emergency Service (SHARES) group is hosting the public
demonstration of emergency communications from 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 25
to 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 26. The event takes place at the Halton Regional
Centre, 1151 Bronte Rd., in parking lot E, located on the south side of the
building. SHARES will set up and operate a radio station capable of
communicating with other Hams worldwide. "Over the past few years, the news
has been full of reports of Ham radio operators providing critical
communications in emergencies including the Japan earthquake and tsunami,
Haiti earthquake, Midwest floods, northern forest fires, tornadoes, and
other events worldwide," according to a media release. "During Hurricane
Katrina, amateur radio -- also called 'Ham radio' -- was often the only way
people could communicate, and hundreds of volunteer 'Hams' used their
communications skills and radio equipment to help save lives and property."
The annual Field Day event helps local Hams and those across the continent
practice their emergency communications skills using voice, digital modes,
and Morse code, over a 24-hour period, which tests equipment and operator
endurance.

CHAMBERSBURG - Local amateur radio operators will gather June 25 and 26 to
spend 24 hours attempting to contact each other while anywhere from a few
dozen to thousands of miles apart. Known as a "Field Day," this
continent-wide event allows amateur, or "ham radio," operators all over the
country and in parts of Canada to use their equipment at the same time in
the hopes making contact with someone in another state or country via a
radio.

Emergency Ham Radio Communication When Standard Systems Down:

WALNUT CREEK -- For years, Larry Loomer did what many people do when
challenged to think about the Big One -- the catastrophic earthquake that
experts predict will happen sooner rather than later in California. He
largely ignored it. Sure, he knew to check the gas line, stock water, store
emergency supplies, and select a designated family meeting place. But in
2005, curious to know more, he took a Walnut Creek CERT class. The 20-hour
Community Emergency Response Team course provided valuable information and
certified the now 74-year-old Concord resident as a volunteer disaster
service worker in the event of an emergency." At graduation, they gave us
FRS radios," recalls Loomer. The family radio service radios are like
walkie-talkies, capable of reaching house-to-house within an average
residential block. "But they're not able to reach from my house to the
local police department emergency operation center. I asked how to get
messages to the place where things will be coordinated in an emergency.
They said ham radio. That's what got me started." That hook -- the desire
for safety -- and other impetus attracts a worldwide community to ham
radios, the late 19th-century technology that is celebrated annually on the
fourth weekend of June. The Mt. Diablo Amateur Radio Club hosts this year's
free annual Field Day on June 25-26, at Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek.
For 24 continuous hours, amateur radio operators demonstrate emergency and
nonemergency communication techniques. Club members explain the use of
solar power, batteries, generators and antennas that provide vital support
for emergency response teams and residents when standard systems are no
longer available.
