Default Stucco House in Los Angeles Hills

So I live in a stucco house in the los angeles hills. I was in hawaii
for the month of december where a random wire tossed out the window,
with the other end wrapped around my grundig p7000 (yes, i know it
stinks but it's all i have until i buy a better radio), was my main rig
and worked pretty well. Could pick up CRI, RNZI, BBC, ABC, etc.

I get back to LA & use the same setup but my reception is total garbage
except for a few religious nuts in which i have no interest-- brimstone
and damnation mixed with right wing politics types.

Is the antenna the problem as it runs in through the window and then
picks up all the interference from the stucco metal lathe? Or does the
radio just suck? I am willing to do a proper antenna setup-- can
anyone suggest anything?

thanks.
