Very long time CBC AM radio station CBU 690 khz is leaving the AM band in
favour of FM. http://www.cbc.ca/bc/making-the-move-to-fm/ Apparently their 50kw transmitter atop Mount Seymour is having difficulty reaching the City of Vancouver. CBU can be heard in a very wide area in southwestern British Columbia and the Northwest Washington State without difficulty. Further this station hosts a sw station CKZU @ 6160 Khz. No word on what will happen to the sw broadcast. == |

I think you can blame this move on noisy computers and metal-framed buildings. No AM station can get a clean signal into a modern office building unless it's pretty much next door. (the TV station I work for had to put a 50-foot wire antenna on the roof to receive WSM 650 for EAS purposes. WSM is of course 50,000 watts and only about ten miles away.) Why didn't you use something like a Stoner DA-100 for the EAS antenna? |

Why not pile in and tell the CRTC (copy to CBC) to stop the phase out of 690 kHz What can the CRTC do to prevent a licensee saying, "I do not want that license any more?" The CBC is one of many broadcasters in Canada who have changed from AM to FM in Canada in the last decade. The CRTC seems to be encouraging, by policy and practice, the cleansing of the AM band whereby eventually the only AMs will be in large markets where a broader range of programming is perceived to be needed. About 40% of Canadian AMs are now gone, and more applications and grants for moves to FM come through each week. Like many other nations, ranging from Austria to South Africa to Ecuador, AM station counts in Canada are being minimized. |
