GB2RS NEWS
Sunday 2nd May 2010 The news headlines Amateur radio exhibition at the European Parliament Romania amateurs gain access to 70MHz GB3VHF beacon back on the air An amateur radio exhibition in the European Parliament organised by the IARU Region 1 EUROCOM working group has started successfully. The exhibition focuses on Emergency communications and Education & Space, with the aim to raise awareness amongst European politicians. The exhibition is sponsored by MEP Mrs Brigit Sippel and was opened by IARU Region 1 President, PB2T. Photos of the event and further details are available on the IARU Region 1 website, www.iaru-r1.org. All radio amateurs in Romania can now apply for access to the 70MHz band. They can run up to 20 watts output between 70 and 70.3MHz on a Secondary basis with a maximum emission bandwidth of 12.5kHz. It is understood that individual requests must be made to the regulator prior to operation. The 144.430MHz amateur radio beacon GB3VHF is now back on the air from BT Fairseat on the North Downs in Kent, grid square JO01EH. The new site is only some 4 kilometres East North East of the old site and at a height of 205 metres ASL with a clear take off in all directions. It should provide similar coverage to that experienced in the past. If you use GB3VHF from time to time please send a report using the Send a reception report facility on the GB3VHF website and also to www.beaconspot.eu. Please also consider supporting the beacon; details of how to do this can be found on the website. The Technical Stream for the RSGB Convention to be held on 9 and 10 October is well under way. Confirmed lectures include Peter Chadwick, G3RZP on the design of linear amplifiers, Ian Wade, G3NRW on using the AIM4170 antenna analyzer as a design tool and Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA on Top Band propagation. There will also be a `hands on' workshop on analysers, dip meters, ATUs and noise bridges for amateurs to learn more about these useful pieces of equipment. Details of the new venue can be found on the RSGB website. Jim Stevenson, G0EJQ, Regional Manager for Region 13, is organising another Train the Trainers course. Once a minimum of ten candidates have signed up, the date and time will be organised to suit everyone. Please contact Jim on 01522 532604 or 0750 0061 306. Now the contest news On Bank Holiday Monday, 3 May, the SSB leg of the 80m Club Championships takes place between 1900 and 2030UTC. The exchange is signal report and serial number. Tuesday 4 May sees the 144MHZ UK Activity Contest take place between 1900 and 2130UTC. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. On the following Sunday, 9 May, the 70MHz CW Contest takes place. With increasing numbers of countries having access to the band and it being well within the Sporadic-E season, there could be some interesting DX to work. Times are 0900 to 1200UTC and the exchange is signal report, serial number, locator and postcode. On the weekend 8 and 9 May, the Alessandro Volta DX RTTY Contest takes place. Work everyone except your own country. In this events there is no distinction between power levels, so expect lots of strong signals. The times are 1200 to 1200UTC on the 3.5 to 28MHz bands with an exchange of signal report, serial number and CQ zone, which is 14 for the UK. Now the solar factual data for the period from the 19th to the 25th of April, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 26th of April. The solar disc was spotless every day. This is the first complete week without sunspots since the end of November last year. As a consequence of a spotless Sun solar activity was very low with no solar flares taking place. Solar flux averaged 75 units and only varied by one unit on some days. The 90 day solar flux average on the 25th was 81 units, that's one down on last week. X-ray flux levels averaged A3.1 units and varied little day to day. Geomagnetic activity was quiet everyday except for the 23rd which increased slightly with an Ap index of 13 units. A small coronal hole was responsible. The average was Ap 7 units. Solar wind data from the ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from 310 kilometres per second on the 20th to 460 by the 23rd. Particle densities were low except for a brief period during the early morning of the 23rd. Bz varied between minus 7 and plus 5 nanoTeslas on the 23rd and between minus and plus 3 nanoTeslas on the quiet days. And finally the solar forecast. This week solar activity is expected to be very low with only a small chance that activity could increase higher. Solar flux levels should be in the high 70's for most of the week. Geomagnetic activity could be at unsettled levels today and tomorrow due to a recurring coronal hole. Levels should then return to quiet levels for the remainder of the period. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north. Darkness hour lows are expected to be about 10MHz. Paths this week to South America should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of about 25MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be around 19MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 1200 and 2000 hours. Finally, as has been widely reported, the new Solar Dynamics Observatory is now fully operational and beaming many exceptionally sharp and detailed pictures of the Sun back to Earth. It promises to make a major contribution to our understanding of the dynamics of the Sun, which affect radio propagation in so many ways. We look forward to drawing on this additional source of information over the years ahead. And that's all for this week from the propagation team.
