GB2RS NEWS
Sunday 11th July 2010 The news headlines Changes to some GB2RS news readings Amateur satellite to Investigate Power Line Interference Thai amateurs to have access to 50MHz for 48 hours Because no volunteers have come forward to join the depleted 80 metre news reading team for the North East of England, it has been agreed that the existing 11am news reading will now be brought forward by 30 minutes and combined with the North West reading. As from today the new combined North of England news reading will take place at 10.30am on 3640kHz LSB. The readers will be headed up by Mark, G0VOF in Blackburn and Melvin, G0LYZ in Driffield. The reading will be followed by an after-news net when reception reports will be greatly appreciated. The RSGB is pleased to announce that two volunteer GB2RS news readers have come forward to restore the Scottish east coast reading on 80 metres. As from today, 11 July, Alex, GM3ZBE near Leven and John, GM8MHU in Aberdeen will be reading the news at 11.30am on 3640kHz LSB. After each reading they will be especially appreciative of reception reports. Hans van de Groenendaal, ZS6AKV will be giving a presentation on South Africa's first CubeSat at the AMSAT-UK Colloquium in Guildford, which is held on 31 July and 1 August. HF radio communication is very susceptible to noise levels that are created by power lines, electrical installations and overhead lines used by trains and busses and power line telecommunication systems. If fact, today there are many installation that do not necessarily comply with internationally agreed emission standards. With increasing solar activity interference signals are propagated over large areas and will interfere with HF communication. The important mission of the SA AMSAT CubeSat is to measure the High Frequency noise levels over South Africa and report these measurements back to a ground station for analysis and action to reduce these unwanted signals. The information from the tiny satellite will identify the areas where HF frequency polluters are situated and will help reduce or eliminate the source. It is also hoped to include a 30kHz linear transponder and an Automatic Packet Reporting System in the CubeSat. For more information on the AMSAT-UK International Space Colloquium visit their website at www.uk.amsat.org/colloquium. The international standards committee responsible for EMC matters, CISPR, has launched an information-gathering campaign aimed at determining the extent and seriousness of interference from plasma TV receivers. Initially they have asked national standards organisations for this data and, in the UK, BSI contacted our Regulator, Ofcom. They posed the simple question, asking how many complaints have there been? Ofcom indicated that they had received only 12 to 15. Over the last few years, the EMC Committee have received many more complaints from members, but no recording system is in place. So, we now need your help. If you have suffered, or are suffering now, from interference from a plasma TV receiver we need to know. All that you have to do is send a very brief e-mail to . We only need to know the number of interference cases, no details, and no names/addresses. Please act as soon as possible, since the timescale for gathering this information is very tight. Amateurs in Thailand will be allowed to use 6 metres during the CQWW VHF contest. For the 48 hours of the contest on 17 and 18 July, Thai amateur radio operators will be operating between 50 and 54MHz. This will be the first use of the 50 to 54MHz allocation by Thai amateurs for 18 years. Region 1 of the IARU is looking for help to keep their records up to date. They have asked that Member societies update or verify the spectrum privileges, especially for 600, 60, 6 and 4 meters as we have been through a period of change in the recent past. If you are interested in seeing what spectrum privileges each country has, then visit www.iaru-r1.org and click on Spectrum and Band Plans on the left hand side of the page. Tickets for the National Hamfest are now available online and buying early can be of benefit. Check out the website www.nationalhamfest.org.uk to see the various discounts that are available. The National Hamfest, organised by the RSGB in conjunction with the Lincoln Short Wave Club, will take place on 1 and 2 October at the Newark and Nottingham Showground. And now for the details of rallies and events for the coming week The South Yorkshire Microwave Round Table finishes today, 11 July. Now for the news of special events Castles And Stately Homes On The Air in Northern Ireland will have a major activation on 16 July. Bobby, MI0RYL has obtained permission to activate both the Stormont Parliament Buildings and Stormont Castle within the Stormont estate in Belfast. A special QSL card will be issued to any contacts that are made. The station should be up and running by 10am with the castle activation number GI022 and WAB No J37. Also on 16 July, Fir Park Wings and Wheels will put GB0FWW on the air from Market Rasen in Lincolnshire. GB0WKS will be on the air on 17 July for the West Kent Society from Tunbridge Wells in Kent. On 18 July, GB2CPS will be on the air from the Castle Point Show on Canvey island in Essex and GB6MMR will be on the air from the McMichael Mobile Rally near Reading. And now the HF DX news compiled from 425 DX News and other sources. Steve, GW0GEI and Tony, GW4VEQ will be taking part in the IARU contest this weekend from Anglesey. The RSGB team is GR2HQ and the station on Anglesey will be one of three 10m SSB stations around the UK. There will be three stations due to the unpredictability of 10m propagation so the station with the best propagation can be picked at any time during the 24 hours. Anglesey is a good location for 10m but if there are times with no Sporadic-E or tropo they are hoping that more local stations will keep the points rising. Once again the Strumble Head DX and Contest Group are activating Ramsey Island, which is IOTA reference EU-124. Using the club call MC0SHL, they will be on the air from 22 July through to 26 or 27 July, depending on the tides. This trip also takes in the RSGB IOTA contest where they will be on the air using the club contest call MW9W over the weekend 24 and 25 July. They will have 3 stations on the air, mostly with SSB, but with some RTTY and CW thrown in. Full details and photographs of last year's operation are on the group's website www.mc0shl.com. All QSL requests should go via the team manager M0URX, see www.m0urx.com. The Finnish WRTC 2002 group in association with Radio Arcala, OH8X, will activate four DXCC countries and ITU zones in the IARU HF World Championship, this weekend, 10 and 11 July. Look out for Greenland with callsign OX8XX, QSL via OH2BH, Aland Islands with callsign OH0X, QSL via OH2TA, Iceland with callsign TF4X, QSL via G3SWH and the Azores with callsign CQ8X, QSL via OH2BH. Following the IARU weekend, and sailing out from the port of Reykjavik, Iceland, you may catch Martti, OH2BH and Leena, OH2BE cruising in Greenland waters, zigzagging among the icebergs for a period of eleven days. Peter, EI4GZB and Declan, EI9HQ will be out activating Worked All Ireland Squares on 18 July. Planned squares to be worked are Oscar 33, 34, 35 and 36 around County Dublin. All squares will be activated /MM. Frequencies to be used will be 14.268, 7.068, 3.680 and 3.760MHz SSB only plus or minus QRM. Now the contest news The IARU HF Championship finishes at 1200UTC today, 11 July, and there may just be enough time to contact one of the HQ stations for those valuable last few points. About 60 of Britain's top contesters will be devoting themselves to the HQ station this year, in a bid to win the coveted HQ section of the contest. Britain and has never yet been placed 1st, coming in at 5th place last year. The HQ team ask that amateurs try and work as many HQ stations on as many bands as possible; all you'll need to give is a signal report and the IARU Zone for Britain, which is 27. 13 July sees the 432MHz UK Activity Contest taking place between 1900 and 2130UTC. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. The 80m Club Championships continues on 14 July with the SSB leg between 1900 and 2030UTC. Exchange s signal report and serial number. Low Power Field Day takes place on Sunday 18 July. Using appropriate and efficient antennas is key to success, because with low power you need to direct as much as possible of your RF at the right angle for the kind of distances that you can expect to work. Most QSOs take place around Britain, but on 40m in particular the Continent will be worked. Of course you'll need a good pair of ears for this event, because the signals from some competing stations will be extremely weak. There are four sections to enter, two for portables and two for fixed stations, with a total of three trophies to be won. Starting at 0900 and ending at 1600UTC, it's CW only and the exchange is signal report, serial number and power. The 70MHz Trophy on also the 18th. Traditionally this event was held in August, but it has now been brought forward by a month to bring it into the Sporadic-E season. With the band available to an ever-increasing number of countries, last year just under 200 stations from twelve countries appeared in the logs. Compare this to ten years earlier, when nobody's Best DX was outside of the UK. The number of entries received has remained remarkably steady though, with 31 in 1999 and 36 in 2009. Running between 1000 and 1600UTC, all modes may be used and the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. The Worked All Britain QRO 2m Phone contest takes place on Sunday 18 July between 1000 and 1400UTC. Multipliers are WAB squares and DXCC countries. You don't have to be a member of the award scheme to partake or give points away. Using all modes in the 2m band the exchange is signal report, serial number and WAB square. Now the solar factual data for the period from the 28th of June to the 4th of July, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 5th of July. A large single spot gradually rotated across the solar disc during the period. The sunspot is probably the remains of a sunspot group from a month ago on its last rotation. Solar activity was very low with no solar flares taking place at all. On the 3rd a series of coronal mass ejections occurred and was spectacularly captured by the SOHO spacecraft. The cause of these CMEs was a couple of filaments that erupted. Solar flux levels decreased slightly from 74 units to 72 by the 3rd. The average was 73. The 90 day solar flux average on the 4th was 75 units, that's the same level as last week. X-ray flux levels showed little variation day to day and averaged A4.4 units. Geomagnetic activity was dominated by a recurring coronal hole disturbance that lasted slightly longer than forecast. The most disturbed day was the 30th with an Ap index of 19 units. The average was Ap 10 units. Solar wind data from the ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from 460 kilometres per second to 710 kilometres per second by the 30th. Particle densities were low every day. Bz varied between minus 2 and plus 3 nanoTeslas on the quiet days and between minus 9 and plus 8 nanoTeslas during the disturbance. The geomagnetic disturbance resulted in a somewhat bumpier ride than most recent weeks, with MUFs at times degraded at HF, particularly over east-west paths. However, the bands appeared to have recovered by the 3rd, with the trans-Atlantic path in notably good shape up to 24MHz. Radio aurora was reported on 6m on several days, but only at high latitudes. And now the solar forecast. This week the quiet side of the Sun is expected to be looking our way. Solar activity should be at very low levels. Solar flux is expected to be at its lowest level for this solar rotation and be around the 70 for most of the week. Geomagnetic activity could be unsettled for the next couple of days due to a recurring coronal hole. The disturbance should not last too long and its effects should be rather mild - going on its last rotation is anything to go by. Quiet conditions should return from midweek onwards. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 18MHz for the south and 15MHz for the north. Darkness hour lows are expected to be about 11MHz. Paths this week to Japan should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of around 17MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 13MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 110 and 1400 hours. Sporadic-E could take place most days. Openings on 144MHz are still possible. Double hop openings should occur to place like the Middle East, North Africa, the Caribbean and North America on 50MHz. And that's all for this week from the propagation team.
