I don't know the FT-757 but if it is the TX drive level you are
changing, could it be that something in the TX section is oscillating? I
once had that happen on my JST-100 and discovered a marginal design in
the driver to the PA. It's was very long ago, I think I used an inductor
somewhere and the problem was gone.
