/////////////////////////////////////////// Poldhu Amateur Radio Club Send Special Call Sign: Posted: 05 Mar 2016 04:06 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/36302 St Piran's Day is being celebrated across Cornwall today, not least in the Helston and Lizard area. In Porthleven this morning more than a dozen people gathered at the home of Andrew Bell for the traditional raising of the black and white flag of St Piran, the patron saint of Cornwall. The 5th century Cornish abbot and saint is also the patron saint of tin miners and the colours of his flag are often said to represent the white of the tin flowing from the black of the underground rock. One of the oldest depictions of the flag can be seen in a stained glass window at Westminster Abbey, which was unveiled in 1888 in memory of the famous Cornish inventor and engineer Richard Trevithick. Meanwhile at the Marconi Centre, Poldhu, amateur radio enthusiasts have been taking to the airwaves to issue Cornish greetings around the world. Poldhu Amateur Radio Club is using a special call sign, GK3MPD, to contact fellow enthusiasts, especially those with Cornish heritage. /////////////////////////////////////////// Tim Peake Contacts Powys School via Amateur Radio: Posted: 05 Mar 2016 04:04 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/36301 Astronaut Tim Peake has been quizzed by Powys high school pupils via a live link with the International Space Station (ISS). Builth Wells and Gwernyfed pupils had eight minutes to question Maj Peake - who became the first Briton to walk in space on 15 January. They used amateur "ham" radio equipment to communicate with ISS as it travelled 215 miles (346km) above Wales. /////////////////////////////////////////// Teen Aces Two Ham Radio Exams In FDL: Posted: 05 Mar 2016 04:01 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/36300 If a receiver mixes a 13.800 MHz VFO with a 14.255 MHz received signal to produce a 455 kHz intermediate frequency (IF) signal, what type of interference will a 13.345 MHz signal produce in the receiver? A. Quadrature noise. B. Image response. C. Mixer interference. D. Intermediate interference. This rather daunting question is one the many questions on the test for your General license for Ham Radio, a hobby that has increased in interest recently all over the world. People use Ham Radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and a lifeline during times of disaster. To get your General Ham Radio license is quite an accomplishment. When you are only 13 years old, it's an incredible accomplishment! That is what happened at Moraine Park on a recent Saturday morning. Last weekend, the Fond du Lac Amateur Radio Club held a testing session at Moraine Park College in Fond du Lac for all Ham radio licenses required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). That's when we meet Isaac Lundberg, 13 years old, a seventh grade student at Redeemer Lutheran School in Fond du Lac. Isaac joined the other applicants and first took the Technicians License, aced it, and then shocked everyone and proceeded to take the General Class Exam. At 13 years of age, he passed both license exams! /////////////////////////////////////////// Amateur Radio Weekly -- Issue 101: Posted: 05 Mar 2016 04:04 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/36299 Amateur Radio Weekly -- Issue 101: |
