Default frequency counter problem

i bought a frequency counter (second user) recently, but I'm not sure if it
works. It seems very insensitive. It is less than 6months old, a hand held
'aceco fc1001'. in normal use it displays random frequencies, but it doesnt
seem to detect nearby radio transmitters unless the antenna is attached and
it is literally touching the antenna of the transmitter (in which case it
will lock onto frequency). ...

For comparison, I tested an
Aceco FC2002 counter in November 2003 Monitoring Times.

It displayed the frequency of a 146 MHz walkie-talkie up
to a maximum distance of 185 feet in a flat, open field.

At 446 MHz, the maximum distance was 161 feet for a walkie-talkie.

The range was only 7 feet when reading the frequency of a
low power wireless microphone near 171 MHz.

The range shrunk drastically to about one inch when reading a 49 MHz
baby monitor transmitter.

For maximum range, you must adjust the telescoping antenna to length,
depending on frequency.
