Regards John The best desktop HF radio I know of that's reasonably practical to run on batteries as a "portable" is the AOR 7030+ I use one for vacations and camping trips. A lower cost alternative would be the Lowe HF-150, but they're out of production, and tough to find. You might also look at the Palstar R30 series. They're available new, but they're quite small for a desk top radio. |

Regards John If you mean a desktop receiver that is also portable, try to find a used Drake-SW8 with a serial number that starts with a '6' or higher. That would be the improved model. They go for about $500. The Grundig Sat-800 is also a large desktop/portable based on the circuitry of the SW8. It sells new for about $500 but I would recommend getting a factory refurbished one for $400. These are checked out by Drake. Otherwise the field is wide open if you want a desktop 'or' portable, but not both. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =----- |

I've got the Palstar R30, Yaesu FRG100, AOR7030, Drake SW8, and Icom R75.
They're all pretty decent receivers. The R30 has the best sounding audio, followed by the 7030, the SW8, and the R75. Sensitivity wise, the FRG100 is the best, closely followed by the R75, the 7030, the R30, and the SW8. Ergonomically, the SW8 is my favorite..............looking inside of the unit, I can see that it was an expensive design. Internal construction is on a par with the R30. If you asked me which one was my favorite, I would have to say "all of them!" My best performing commercial receiver is my Racal 6790/GM, but that thing is HUGE at 22 inches deep, so it doesn't get too much use on my nightstand. My favorite portable is the Grundig 210. They just don't make them with that turret type of bandswitch anymore. That's not to say that the new ones aren't any good. They are very good. Pete Ken Thomas wrote in message ...
