I tried one in the store and it worked good, but I bought a 706MKIIG
anyway. Both good radios. I have a narrow filter for the 706 plus I
also have the LDG tuner so those were a couple of reasons I went that
way. I see the 857 has a $175 coupon which brings the price down to
$600 or so.

Just got the 706MKIIG today, and I must say it's quite a different
radio from the first one I had several years ago.
