![]() We hams worry about getting signals through a few meters of transmisssion line. How about doing it through a few thousand kilometers, under an ocean, without a computer model, and finally getting it to work? The USA PBS TV network is showing a new program, "American Experience: The Great Transatlantic Cable" tonight (April 11, 2005) at 9pm EDT. If you can't get PBS, a google search for "Transatlantic Cable" "Cyrus Field" brings up several links that look promising. Cheers, 73, Ron McC. Ronald C. "---tonoght (April 11, 2005) at 9pm EDT." Expect the PBS presentation to be excellent, as usual. For great information in clear, concise form, the "Lenkurt Demodulator" was almost unbeatable. The topic of its January 1968 edition was "Undersea Cable". This edition was also included in Lenkurt`s 2nd book of reprints. History and technical aspects are covered. First transatlantic cable between Britain and America was placed in 1858, lasted 20 days, carried 732 telegraph messages, and saved the British government 50,000 pounds it is said. It took sixteen and a half hours to pass a 99-word message from Queen Victoria to President Buchanan. The next cable was laid in 1866 and lasted. Best regards, Richard Harrison, KB5WZI |

Just more voltage than it could handle. Thats why it lasted 20 days. PBS Stations are independent stations and usually Tape Delay programs, the Date and Time of the program will be different for every station. -- Korbin Dallas The name was changed to protect the guilty. |
