Programming The HT1250

I am new to programming Motorola Radios. I have always programmed Relm.
I have a Motorola HT1250. I have the CPS ver R6.06.00. I have a USB
Ribless cable for my programming cable. It is using COM 7. I select COM
7 under FileRead Radio and it gives me a error message "Could not open
port. Check to see it Device/Rib is powered on or not, and the Device
to Rib, and the Rib to PC is ok." Now my question is, do I need to be
pressing a button on the Radio before reading the device? Also is
there a certain order the cable needs to be put on (while radio is on
or off)? Thanks for any help.
