Nice buy, and the seller was probably just as pleased.

I have a bunch of that old stuff. I even have Windows 3.1. Also
found Windows NT Workstation 4.0 still sealed in the plastic wrapper.

The trick with Windows 95 on floppies is that you will have had to make your
'backup' copies BEFORE installing it for the first time. Silly buggers
designed those disks so that the first install disk is altered during the
install so that it can't be reused except on the original machine it was
installed on. Mind you, there may have been some industrious hacker that
has figured another way around that by now...

Sorry, but I have to contradict you on that. I have a set of Win95
disks I have installed on three different computers and have never
observed the situation you mention. Perhaps there were different
versions issued by Microsoft?

It's possible, but I do know that of the three sets I have had, the first
installation modified a file on the first installation disk, so that the
installation disk had to look for a code that it had installed on the
original machine... and if it didn't find it, the installation would not
continue.

These could have been either later versions than the one(s) that you are
familiar with, or later, more secure, versions. I have no idea which.

If you get the updated version, It will look for win 3.1. If you get the full
version, It installs with out a flaw.

BTW..Win 98 is the same way. I have a upgrade ver. When it looks for a previous
ver. I place the win 3.22 disks in the floppy drive and let it rip.

Your advice about making duplicates is still good, however.

Why not just click the "write protect" on the disks? It might stop the
installation, but at least it wouldn't write to the diskette??

Not true! I had factory Win95 floppies for years, and used them on
several computers until moving up to later versions. Came as a series of
33 1.67MB floppies, which were copyable, if you formatted your disks for
1.67 MB size. I'd have sent them to the original poster, but gave them
away not two weeks earlier.

Since you received no answer, I'll post mine. My factory MS set for
the full installation of Windows 95 from floppy disks contained 3 boxes,
holding a total of 33 floppies, I think (possible it was 36, but don't
think so . . . I just gave them away last month!). Also, of importance,
these were all formatted to 1.67 MB rather than the standard 1.44 MB.
