What's the best way to remove or clean the smoke odor from electronics? I
buddy of mine bought a radio and it reeks of cigarette smoke!

Set it outside on a sunny day, preferably with a breeze blowing.

You might try one of those ionizing air purifiers running near it also.

Also, you may want to try some baking soda. Wrap some up in some cloth
pouches or perhaps paper towels, anything that can "breathe" but contain
the baking soda so it doesn't get all over the interior of the radio and
place them in the radio.

Try enclosing the whole radio or what ever it is inside a plastic bag
and inside the plastic bag with the radio put some charcoal, as much as
possible. Leave sit for a couple of days but be sure to tie the bag up
tight. I'm not sure it will work, but worth a try.

Ozone generators will destroy odor molecules but you have to be careful
as ozone is a corrosive gas and in large enough quantities can damage
electrical components.

you can put the radio in a bag and add dryer sheets...like Bounce or other..it
will work..also spray what they call Frebrez..a fabric spray..it will take the
smell out of it also..

I use NOW all purpose cleaner. This stuff is great! It has to be diluted
with water and goes a long way. Spray it on and watch the brown crud run off
like crazy. Be sure and test it on painted surfaces. Most paint can take it
but some will not. I learned this the hard way after seeing the white
lettering disappear on some heathkit gear I cleaned. After cleaning with NOW
I finish up with Windex. After a good cleaning inside and out the stink is
gone. I get NOW at Sam's Club but it should be available elsewhere. 73, Joe

Dave, and old friend of mine restores old Collins stuff,
and Ive seen plenty over the years that reek with damn
nicotene smell!

Trade secret: Ammonia and 409 kitchen cleaner! must be
done in the garage or outside, not in the house or it will
get you!

You need to be very careful when mixing common household cleaners like
that. Perhaps that was the basis for your warning. Even outside or in
a paritally enclosed area (garage with the door open) may not be enough.

I've used activated charcoal that you can get at any store that sells
aquarium supplies. Put some of the charcoal in a pan or paper plate.
Spread it out to get the most surface area exposed. Put the radio and
charcoal in a plastic bag for a day or two. I've had good results with
this.

I have cleaned up several old pieces of electronic equipment over the
years. Doing this outside, spray the components with 409 cleaner and
wait 15 minutes or so before rinsing with a garden hose.

Bake in the oven at very low temperatures NTE 125 deg for about four
hours to dry. Watch the temperature as not to damage plastic components.

The equipment will be as clean as new and the smell gone.
