Contact Cleaner? Idea
 

Will WD-40 work? Have a very scratchy volume potentiometer. A better way
to clean and fix?

Only if you want to destroy the control. Try, at the very least, Tuner/Control Cleaner & Lubricant
sold at RS. Better yet, get a quality cleaner like PUREtronics Contact Cleaner.

Do NOT use WD-40!!!. I'm not familiar with PUREtronics stuff, but I use
Chemtronics 'Tun-O-Wash' for my applications and it works great. The best
stuff you can use, if you can find it, is Cramolin R-5. And Glenn is right
too...the color TV tuner cleaner at Radio Shack works pretty good too.

Caig industries also makes a good product called DeOxit. What's nice
about this product is you can get it in various concentrations and delivery
methods. I find the 5% spray can works fine but I've heard the 100% in
a dropper works great, too.

You should see what it does for model trains!

Caige Laboratories DeOxit is best.

Many people believe the Deoxit D5 product by Caig is either the best,
or among the best. Caig has a whole line of cleaners, lubes, etc for
electronics. They have a reasonably priced sampler kit with small
quanitities of several products.

I bought a spray can (which will probably last me years) and I am real
happy with it.

Best stuff ever saw for cleaning contacts is a liquid freon spray-
It is clean enough to use on a telephone switch, non toxic, and
removes grime quite well- Problem? well, 1) the stuff is banned in California,
2) you have to be a service shop to buy the stuff! There originally was a
Motorola service notice for the problem of "Fretting" in plugs and sockets.
Use the freon spray, then use an inhibitor that AMP makes. Allows good contact
yet, prevents oxidation/dirt build-up. Think the Freon spray was from INTERTECH
(been few years ago, when I retired) You might be able to get a nearly empty
can from a service shop, for a moderate price. They even had a minature scrub
brush for the freon spray! with about 12 inch hose, and a spray nozzle contained
a small brush like the one you would use to clean the head of a electric RAZOR!.
Worked quite well, as I remember. Might also be available at TALLEY industries.
For normal person, full can would probably last several lifetimes.
