The biggest difference is that the AL80B has some circuitry that biases the
tube off during periods when there is no drive. That means a lot less heat
out of the thing in standby. I've had both and I'd buy the AL80A just
because it has nicer meters and you can get a better price on one!

The B model has "Dynamic ALC doubles average SSB power
The AL-80B's exclusive Dynamic ALC gives you high-level low-distortion RF
processing."
I don't believe the A model had this.
Heard some folks modified the A model to get rid of this feature as they had
problems with it.
