Recommend a two-way radio?

Posted: 01 Nov 2014 12:20 PM PDT
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio..._twoway_radio/

My workplace place utilizes two way radios (Motorola RDM2070d) in a
warehouse environment. However, there arent enough to go around and
sometimes they go "missing", shall we say, when you arent looking. Ive had
it confirmed that we can carry our own walkies and a few people already
have one.
Some of the technical specifications Im seeing are confusing to an amateur
while trying to compare products. Can anyone please recommend a two way
radio that is compatible with the Motorola RDM2070d? Or at least point me
in the right direction. Any advice would be greatly appreciate. submitted

New ham going mobile

Hi everyone, Im new to ham radio and this subreddit and Im really enjoying
myself in the "looking around" phase. I just passed technician and general
today so Im excited to be able to transmit instead of just listening to my
local repeater traffic. Ive got a Boafeng BF-F8+ that I listen on and if
like to take it in my car for more possible listening and transmitting.
Studying for my license told me that an exterior antenna is a necessity.
Any suggestions? Im not entirely against drilling into my car but Id prefer
not to.
Thanks again for being part of such an inviting and helpful hobby.

Radios for School use

Posted: 31 Oct 2014 08:00 PM PDT
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...or_school_use/

Hello all,
I work for a public school district. I have always been interested in radio
and am taking my technician test this upcoming Monday. I am wanting to
propose that we get radios for several uses within our district. I am
thinking that we need a maintenance channel, a bus channel, and a security
channel. I have been searching tons of different options for our need and
have yet find what I am looking for. Should we get Motorola business radios
and just use the MURS channels(there is no use of them in our town, I
monitor daily), should we try to buy a frequency (pair?), or use other
frequencies?
Our main use would be basic maintenance/janitor communication within a 3
mile radius with about 8 users; the same are is security but only for 5 or
less users during emergency situations.
Buses is a bigger problem. Our school district covers a fairly large
geographic area (~25 mile radius). This is in the Ozarks, so lots of trees
and decent size limestone hills. I would like to have a system like APRS
for bus tracking and of course voice. I would also like to allow the buses
to communicate with the local police/fire for emergency purposes.
I love the idea of getting a frequency pair and setting up a 150ft
tower..but I am sure that would be overkill. I also love the idea of
digital(especially for APRS functionality) but again that may me overkill.
I am thinking that PLd MURS may be a decent setup for our needs but of
course may lack the power to work for our buses.
Thanks for any ideas and information...
Edit 1: I am not talking about the users using amateur radio for
communication. I am talking about using MURS or Business radio frequencies.
This probably isnt the best spot to post this...but I didnt know where else
to.
Edit 2: Thanks for the info guys. I think right now a simple MURS setup for
campus comms should be good. If I can get a grant then I may look into a
repeater. Now that yall have said all of this about the police not wanting
too do this..I see what you mean. The local police did give us a few radios
with the capability to talk to them..but I dont think that having every bus
with that capability is a good thing. However, I do think that the
superintendent of the school should keep that capability. submitted by

[Advice] Opinions on Kenwood TS-820?

Posted: 31 Oct 2014 09:59 PM PDT
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...kenwood_ts820/

I have an opportunity to purchase a Kenwood TS-820 and an AT-50 automatic
antenna tuner for what I think is a pretty decent price.
Before I invest I was hoping some of you more experienced guys would give
me your thoughts on the rig. Itll be my first HF rig.
Yes, Ive checked eHam and Universal Radio which both rate it well and
opinions seem positive, but some personal thoughts would be appreciated.
Especially, as a first HF radio.
Also, anything I should know or ask when I meet with the buyer would be
great. Any tips about the rig are also greatly welcome.
I just dont want to throw money away on a bad choice.
Thanks in advance all. submitted by Hypothesising_Null
