KKOB-AM, an all-news station in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which operates with
50,000 Watts on 770 kHz, was forced off the air for a time yesterday when a
hot air balloon carrying two child passengers became entangled in its 700
feet high transmission tower. The passengers, aged 10 and 14, and
69-year-old pilot Bill Chapel were taking part in the annual Albuquerque
International Balloon Fiesta. The three were able to climb down to 100 feet,
where they were met by rescue workers with safety gear. The Federal Aviation
Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating
the incident.
