Now, does that mean that there will be silence in the channel until the tone
is heard, and does it work for the entire radio at once, or just for a
specific channel?

CTCSS (same as Motorola's 'PL') has the xmtr send a subaudible tone.
The receiving radio will not break squelch unless the CTCSS tone is heard.
