If the Bob-Tail or half square is fed at the top then W4RNL calls them
independent of ground. Go to his web page and see his facts. If its a
traditional bob-tail as W6BCX envisioned and fed at the bottom of the center
element and then to ground then a good ground radial system is required. I
have a half square on 80 that runs E and W and is therefore broadside N/S
the ends are 20 and 30 feet off the ground. No radials required.

The half square is a bob-tail and the bob-tail you see literature is really
a 3 el version.
