Yes you only need 1 license each to talk on any GMRS radio. but why
don't you try the FRS radios. you don't need a license with them and
can talk a long ways i believe 2 miles at least
But with GMRS, you can use mobile or base radios with up to 50 watts and even
use repeaters.
I personally got into GMRS because my wife doesn't want to get a ham license
and this will allow us to talk when one of us is out. I bought 3 Standard UHF
mobile radios (30 watts each). I've got a GMRS base antenna outside, which will
eventually be about 10 feet above the roof and the other two radios will be in
our 2 cars with Antenex NMO mount antennas on the trunk.
