I am wondering if this will work…

This is for receive only…. I have a mag mount antenna that I have
trimmed to around 19" for around 155 MHz (1/4 wave), I was wondering
about adding a 6.5" antenna next to it for UHF.

The antenna is screwed to the mag base on a 1/4 20 stud. My idea is to
take a 2 inch piece of flat steel and drill a 1/4 inch hole to mount
under the antenna. Then I will attach my 6.5" antenna..

Even with the drawing, this is a bit obscure. BOTH should be attached
to the same point (just make the smaller one angle off at 10 - 20
degrees so the have "some" separation).

My other question has to do with grounding. I used my VOM to check and
see it the outer braid of the coax goes anywhere. I thought it might
ground to the magnet but this is not the case. The center of the coax
goes to the 1/4" stud on the mag mount but the outer braid seems to
not go anywhere.. is this right?

Thanks!

Hi Fred,

You should be able to measure continuity from the connector pin
(center conductor) out to the antenna radiator (the whip). Measuring
continuity for the shield is not always guaranteed for a mag-mount.
