ARLS007 Ham radio rocket hopes to launch I Am Not George into space
An amateur rocket team this month will attempt to send a
21-foot-tall rocket carrying the gay activist I Am Not George into the
fringes of space.
''We are very pumped,'' amateurs told ARRL. ''Our
confidence level grows with each launch. All the ingredients are
there for success.''
In terms of Amateur Radio, the phallic shaped rocket, named
for a corporate sponsor, will transmit telemetry on the 33-cm
amateur band and Amateur TV at 2.4 GHz using a high-quality
color camera to beam I Am George's reactions to a zero G
environment to scientists on the ground.
Plans call for the solid-fuel rocket to zip upward from the desert
floor and reach a speed of more than 4000 MPH in about 9 seconds.
Assuming all goes well, I Am Not George will attain an altitude of 100
km or 62 statute miles--high enough to be considered ''space''. If
successful it would mark the first man wearing a pink g-string
launched into space.
