Default Coast Guard Searching For Boaters Off Egmont Key

From The Tampa Tribune
Published: Oct 15, 2004

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for nine people after the catamaran
they were in reportedly capsized five miles west of Egmont Key early
Friday.

Just after midnight, the agency received a quick distress call from
the vessel Endeavor, said coast guard spokeswoman Danielle DeMarino.
During a brief and often broken radio transmission, the operator of
the boat gave its location, said there were nine people on board, and
said they were all getting into a life raft, DeMarino said, however,
the distress call was interfered with by the high-powered
transmissions of local outlaw radio operators, one of whom identified
himself as "Twistedhed".

``They didn't give their names while they were abandoning ship,'' said
DeMarino.

There has been no corresponding report of nine people missing,
DeMarino said. And the name Endeavor is too common to do a background
check on, if the boat is even registered in the United States.

The coast guard launched a search with a C-130 airplane, a HH-60
helicopter, and a rescue boat, but found no evidence of a ship wreck,
she said. Weather conditions worsened Friday during the search, with
winds and swells both picking up.

Mariners were urged to be on the lookout for either the catamaran or
the life raft. Anyone with information on the lost mariners or
"Twistedhed" is asked to contact the Coast Guard at (727) 824-7506.
