looking at regular scanner noise reduction headsets, in particular the
Radio Shack unit p/n: 33-1158.

Does anyone have these, and if so, how are they to wear for long
periods, ie a full race? sound?

Anything would be better then what you're using now. I have a cheapo set
that I use at the races and they work just fine.
