I just bought my first scanner from a friend for $50 (Radioshack PRO-2046).
Although it can pick up a few channels, the local police departments around
me are all converting to digital systems and most are already
trunk-tracking.

I think saving $500 would get me a very nice unit, as i hope to turn this
into my new hobby. Would you guys suggest the Uniden Bearcat BC796D? I've
looked and this unit seems to be the cream of the crop, for my sake of use.
Would you guys recommend anything else?
