I just bought my first scanner from a friend for $50 (Radioshack PRO-2046).
Although it can pick up a few channels, the local police departments around
me are all converting to digital systems and most are already
trunk-tracking.

I think saving $500 would get me a very nice unit, as i hope to turn this
into my new hobby. Would you guys suggest the Uniden Bearcat BC796D? I've
looked and this unit seems to be the cream of the crop, for my sake of use.
Would you guys recommend anything else?

Might be "overkill". It all depends on your planned "usage". Do
you really need the APCO 25 card installed?

In my area, Dallas PD & FD still use the 460mhz range. Most of
the cities in my immediate area are on 800mhz Motorolla Type II
system. (actually, my BC245XLT works fine - minus the alpha tags
on the scanner display)

I have determined that, FOR ME, the BC250D or the BC785D will
work. (At roughly half the price of the BC796D)

My home county will be moving to the 700mhz if in 6 to 10 years
when/if the need arises.

Per trunkedradio.net:
http://www.trunkedradio.net/index.php
Per communications of Denton County TRS. The plan for this system
is to go to all digital in about 6-10 years. The plan is to not
go digital till the switch to 700mhz becomes available for public
safety users and the need for upgrade is necessary.
Till that time there will be a simucast on both 700/800mhz for
about a year then full digital will be implented.
