I see you were looking for a base unit.
Sorry the Pro-96 is a handheld. It's still a great radio!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Have to go to the shack to get a few things for
this new house anyways (new RG6, speaker wire etc)
so I will definitly take a look at that..

Almost forgot
For programing
You can make your own cable or buy one from many

sources.

The best programing software is from Don Star

called Win-96 and only

cost $30

Now that I have your attention,,,

I am not new to scanning (used to have a pro

2006

way back) but it has been some time (probably

a

good 10 years) since I was into scanning.

Now things have settled down in my crazy life

and

I recently found my old handheld pro 25 and
plugged in a few frequencies from the new city

I

am living in (east lansing michigan 48823), I
forgot how much I missed just having the

scanner

on now and then, so far its been fun but I

miss my

base unit.

Since it has been a good 10 years or so, what

are

the newer better base units that might offer
things like display name (that you can program

in

text on), and what new base models/makers

cover

whatever frequency ranges are currently being

used

(the most) these days...

I never got into anything that hooked upto the
computer but that would be neat too (to

program it

in off the pc if possible thru usb or

something?)

and I never got into (or understood) the whole
concept of trunk tracking or anything beyond

enter

this frequency and hear this fire or police
department (using the radioshack books).

I figured if I came in here and asked around I
would get some suggestions on what the newer
models offer and or what might be a good

choice

for someone wanting to get back into scanning
after all these years.

Looking to spend under $1000 for something

that

might do 75% of what I am hoping since it has

been

a good 10 years here since I used a scanner ..
