I've seen longer telescopic whips like the Maxon WTA-1, which is a 48" CB
whip. I wonder if the center-load on the Radio Shack actually does make up
for it being only 26" when fully extended?

When base loaded: It's good for 25 - 35 Mhz
When centre loaded: You may cut/adjust the tip to your preferred freqs
When top loaded: It makes a good performer from 27 to 500Mhz
At least it is much more rugged than a teleskopic whip.
A teleskopic antenna has has the advantage that it can be adjusted to the
frequency you want to receive within a very wide range.
