Hi, RHF, I think you're right usually regarding the 70% of retail as a
maximum guideline for eBay bidding, but there are exceptions when an
item is not readily available although purportedly still in
production. In late July I paid about $120 on eBay for a Sony AN-LP1
(retail ~$85 if you can find one). I notice that there's another one
on eBay right now which has already bid up past that with another day
and a half left in the bidding (up to $122.50 as I write this).

Anyway, I agree with your guideline 99% of the time, and of course I
realize that some may think me foolish to pay that 50% penalty, but I
really wanted the item. Put differently, maybe I had more money than
sense. :-) Still, I enjoy the AN-LP1 very much when traveling.
