There are many people that live in parts of the world where common
products by western standards are hard get, so they shop for them on
Ebay. Having said that, I still think there's a lot of 'shill bidding'
taking place on Ebay.

I was bidding (not on ebay) on a laptop a while back, and there were 28
available. I started out #20, went up to #7, then the auction "ended"
and the price went up over 200 bucks, and I stopped at a little over 100
more than it was when the auction "ended". All the raising bids were
from California, where the company having the auction was, and the
pattern looked suspicious. I was 22 and dropping like a rock when I
logged off to go get dinner. I was kind of shocked to find a message in
my email congrating me as one of the winning bidders. I was tied with a
guy in my town at #15.

I was kind of paranoid, but went through with the deal. The laptop was
fine, and has an LT Winmodem that works better than any I have ever
used, on any machine!
