A wile back I fed up with overloading I wrote an AGC mod for the ATS
818/DX-190
It involves making the AGC Detector a voltage doubler (grounding anode of D9
and adding a diode)
It was much improvement, however strong 50KW stations here in NYC area (MW
band) still overload it See:

Mine (DX-392) reads like it should. I know there's an adjustment for that.
