The reception will seldom be of the quality that you would expect of a
nearby Broadcast AM or FM station. Since the signal propagation relies on
the ionosphere, the current condition and altitude of the ionosphere will
seriously affect your ability to receive signals.
Reception of certain shortwave stations can *often* be the quality of a
local AM station, except for the reduced bandwidth of the audio. Radio
Australia on 9580 in the morning (USA), usually sounds like a local AM
station just a few miles from me.
