Why turn the radio on and off? Because the MD recorder can't be controlled.
With a radio that cannot turn on after a power interruption your timer could
control a mechanically controlled cassette recorder. One could use a VCR to
record the radio's audio without the external timer.
Downside of both schemes is that the radio is not programmed to different
frequencies at different times.
