That sounds like a good use for fuel cells -- light-weight, long-life
portability.

Normally, fuel cells are not feasible. Energy-wise, it takes 4-10 times as much
energy to make hydrogen than the resulting hydrogen provides.

Because it also takes 4-10 times as much energy to make methanol (and ethonol)
than the resulting methanol provides, the energy efficiency in the above fuel
cell is way down in the negative range.
