When I was a kid the neat thing was turning the knob slowly on the am tube

Since your deadline is short, I suggest starting out by looking at
some dealer web sites because they'll have a selection to choose from
in various price ranges. Then ask questions about specific radios
that look interesting to you.

Otherwise, you'll get random suggestions of radios individuals like -
but they may or may not fit in with what you're looking for. For
example, "not much $" is subjective. To some people that means under
$50. To others it means under $500. Someone suggested the Grundig
S-350 - I've seen complaints about it drifting. But many people do
love them.

Drift's good for him :-) He'll appreciate a better radio when he grows
into it.
