The first out of area MW station I heard in NYC at least 4 decades ago
was either WWVA or WOWO. WOWO, of course, is gone.

WOWO gone? That's funny, I just tuned over to 1190 and there they are.

Yeah, loud and clear here, too (I live not too far from dxace). Some
months back, a contributor referred to WOWO as a "blowtorch of the
Midwest" - always was, too - my first "out-of-state' catch as a boy was
WOWO.

Not much of a blowtorch at night anymore. As far as I know they drop power to 9800 watts
at night vs. the 50 kw during the day.

I spent a lot of fun time as a kid just up the hill from the WOWO transmitter site at my
grandparents farm.
