Why do WiFi basestations use two antennas?

The latter works. The former doesn`t.
Coupling two antennas together produces a directional array, not space
diversity. The only way to produce space diversity is to selsct a
signal from a group while rejecting the others. With multiple signals,
there is always some combination that can produce complete cancellation.
