Hi Dave, that 746Pro is a heck of a rig..for the money, probably the best hf
transceiver to be had...Although, I have to be honest, I'm a sucker for the
kenwood tx audio..the 870's really sound nice..I have a small rack of audio
equipt that is just sitting here, along with a Heil goldline pro..through the
870 it would sound really nice...I can't really complain about the rcvr on the
450, it does a great job..

Oh well....Thanks for the advice/reply..

Steve

I like having a dedicated rig for SWL. This way I can listen to a program
while cruising around on the amateur bands. That said, I think the question
is: What kind of increase in performance are you looking for? Better audio,
or better sensitivity? Perhaps both?
For casual listening, your 450 probably does a pretty good job. Kenwood
does a good job with A.M.. Does the 450 have a filter on AM? If not, you
would probably see an improvement by adding one.
You likely will not see a big difference in whether you can copy a station
or not. The big difference between the communications receivers and most
ham/general coverage rigs is in the quality of the AM audio and filtering.
Go somewhere where you can compare the audio output of different radios to
see what you think.
If you are very serious about having top of the line SWL capability, then
you may want to check the receiver only radios by Icom, JRC, Drake etc. If
you are on a budget and want one radio for both amateur and SWL, try an Icom
746pro.You will get a large improvement on all counts. It will outperform
about any receiver only radio, and will give you great transmit ssb audio on
the amateur bands. It's only real weakness is AM transmit audio. Not bad,
but not great either. Enjoy your research,
