Study links childhood cancer, power lines

LONDON, England, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- A British study finds that children who

live near high-voltage electrical power lines may have twice the risk of
some kinds of cancer.

On the other hand, they may not.

Interestingly, CWs assessment may be correct. Since the first actual
study of this in Sweden several years back, which seemed to indicate
that children near the magnetic fields of powerlines were at risk of
leukemia, there have been several other studies conducted that show
varying results, including utterly no connection at all.

Others have pointed out that the magnetic field of the earth itself is
far stronger at any point that the EMF of a powerline even at close
range. This is fairly easily demonstrated with a simple compass.

My own personal opinion is that it is better to be safe than sorry,
and that humans and other living things should be shielded from
unnatural and unintentional harm - but, assuming we make reasonable
efforts to resolve this to a confident answer, powerline EMF does not
strike me as the big devil du jour, and there is no need to panic over
this one.

It makes a bunch of sense, for about 10 other good reasons, to put
them underground, though.
