buy a few parts and make a 3-terminal regulator

I'll try Lars' solution and if the results aren't totally satisfactory
with my setup, I might try Tomi's (which may be a little beyond my
electronics capabilities, but who knows...).
I'll do the surgery on my Radio Shack adapter this weekend. Looking
forward to getting into shortwave listening again (it's been 20-25
years since I've done much of it). My other installation will be a
suitable external antenna.
