The Icom R-2 is a small wideband. It does well on all bands. No DX machine

I had the Yupiteru MVT 7100 which is brilliant on VHF, it was OK on SW,

but
nothing brilliant.

Check out http://www.strongsignals.net/index.cgi for review of scanners

I'm thinking about getting a VHF/UHF pocket scanner which also has some
HF coverage. I realize these models don't have really good HF reception
but I think it would be nice to have that feature just for fun. I'd
appreciate hearing from any of you that own one or know something about
the various brands/models.

Thanks

The Icom R2 does receive shortwave ....... with a caveat or two: it
is a fixed and wide bandwidth, have never received shortwave with the
stock duck. That being said, if you want a scanner and ability to
listen to the major broadcasters this fits the bill; have used mine
mobile with a 19" whip antenna and have heard BBC, Radio Australia, DW
- when they broadcast to the US, Radio China Intnl & a few others. If
you have about 30' of wire wrap about 10-15 turns on the duck then
string out the rest and you're set. However, don't expect anything
more than the handful of major broadcasters.

I've heard that the Yaesu is much more sensitive on shortwave though;
both in this thread and in previous threads on this topic. I'd say if
it's a passing interest then go with the R5 (R2 replacement) due to
cost/benefit: if you plan on regular use and demand more reasonable
shortwave then look at the Yaesu and perhaps the Yupiteru.
