It's about 4 years since I bought my Yupi, so I decided to take a look at what's available now.
If I was in the market, a radio I'd be taking a closer look at is the Yaesu VX-7R.
It's smaller than most of the others folks have mentioned, and it's a ham HT so it may have better selectivity on HF. It's priced about $10-20 higher than the VX-500 wideband receiver. It comes with a Lithium Ion battery.
Unfortunately, it didn't turn up when I did a quick look at the Strong Signals web site.
I wouldn't get one without checking it's reputation fairly carefully, as the Yaesu VR-5000 looked nice on phosphor, but got lackluster reviews for hf performance.
Who are the US dealers for the Yupiter line of scanners? I haven't had
much luck with a Google search.
Thanks
You'd have to import a Yupi, as they're "no gap" radios.
The two big dealers who export them here seem to be bandercom and
javiation.
You can find links he

I've dealt with both, thought Bandercom had better service, but
Javiation had some leather cases made up that were much nicer than the
plastic one Yupi offered.
A Canadian dealer also sold them, but their prices were considerably
higher because they figured you'd pay through the nose to listen to
analog cell phones.
You order on line, pay with plastic, and it arrives in 3-4 days.
