The basic Winradio 303 (without the "professional" demodulator) runs $500 for the internal one, and $600 for the external one, so it's a little out of his target price range unless he can find one on sale.

Personally, I'd avoid the internal ones -

Yea - you stay away from the internal one. What a goof. Typical
liberal - critical of something you've never seen, owned or used.
And $500 - over the period of years he'll own the radio works out to
very small and worthwhile investment. Unless you're DeWayne (hey hey
hey) and buy and sell the same radio in the same week - every week.

Computer technology advances much faster than radio technology.

PCI slots will eventually be phased out in favor of something better.

If you own a 3 year old internal Winradio, odds are you'll have a tough
time buying a new computer to use it in because back then, they were all
for the ISA bus - and motherboard makers started leaving ISA slots out
of new designs about 4 years ago.

A good radio bought today will probably still be a good radio in 20 years.

But I wouldn't care to bet you'll be able to buy a new computer then
that'll include a PCI slot.

Whatever happens with PC architecture, odds are pretty good there will
be a way to hook up something that runs on a serial port.

I agree spending more can end up being a better bargain in the long run,
but the guy who asked the original question set a price range, and I
don't presume to know more than he does about his budget.

If I did, perhaps you would be justified in thinking I was a liberal.

As for me, if I was limited to $400, I think I'd go back to an R8.
