Speaking of these vintage receivers lacking digital readout, would it
be possible to add such a display or are there third-party displays
out there?

I have done this in the early 80's on a CB radio. Had a frequency
counter with a 455khz offset switch. I tapped the freq in the 455khz IF
stage of the single conversion radio. It's more complicated when you
have a multi conversion RX. On RX's with very low or no IF stage often
used in vintage RX's the tapping then may affect the signal. Modern high
grade frequency counters are programmable for any offset you want or you
will have to calculate all the time :-) It's not such a big deal.
I also have an older multiband HF-VHF-UHF-radio wich has real analog
tuning and a built-in real[tm] frequency counter -not a PLL-coupled
"should be on this frequency *display*". :-)
