To ask an obvious question
What do readers think this is? A prank? Spy station? WWV gone feral?
The Sam activity observed in December would seem to point to a spy or
some other government operation of some kind. The Sam transmissions were
neatly spaced over four different frequencies audible at different
levels of signal strength at my location, indicating four different
transmitters in four different locations acting together. It is unlikely
that a prankster would go to such trouble. The big question is what it
means, if indeed it's a spy station. It was theorized that it was a "go
signal" for some sort of spy operation. But since it's back at reduced
power (my check of 5 and 10 Mhz at 0100 showed nothing unusual) that
would not seem to be the case.

This via the WUN Listserver and was posted this morning:
For those who are interested:
The "Sam" Pirate that was so popular last month is now on 5 Mhz.
Can be heard in Southern AZ faintly on top of WWV.

I wonder if he'll be starting up on other frequencies as well?
