The XM radio antenna are circular polarized patch antenna's. The easiest
way to make one is to use printed circuit procedures.
Unless you want to undergo the educational aspects of the exercise my
advice is to buy a commercially made antenna.

I don't know about XM, but the Sirius antennas I have seen contain both a CP
sat antenna and a vertical terrestrial antenna. Also, they included preamps.

The terrestrial antenna is for those large city locations (NYC, Chicago,
etc.) where tall buildings can shadow the satellite signal and are
used to supplement the sat sig in these areas. They require local non
space based transmitters.
I used to sell these things.
